Lakers finish off Magic in five games for 15th championship

Lakers finish off Magic in five games for 15th championship

Kobe-Bryant-SI.jpg

ORLANDO, Fla. -- After his jump shot cleared the outstretched hand of Hedo Turkoglu and buried itself in the back of the net, Lakers guard Kobe Bryant turned and pumped his fist. Orlando coach Stan Van Gundy called a timeout. He should have waved a white flag. Though more than eight minutes remained, the smile on Bryant's face as he jogged to the Los Angeles bench explained everything. The Lakers were minutes away from clinching the NBA title, and Bryant had led them there.

Equal parts respected and reviled, Bryant finally emerged from Shaquille O'Neal's massive shadow Sunday. Bryant, the winner of three titles this decade as the sidekick to O'Neal, cemented his place in basketball history Sunday as the unquestioned on-court leader of a championship team and a Finals MVP. His Lakers stomped the Magic 99-86 to win the series 4-1 and claim the 15th title in franchise history.

"It felt like a big old monkey was off my back," Bryant said. "It felt so good to be able to have this moment. We tried not to envision it too much because you just get too excited. You try not to think about it, just think about playing the game, and for this moment to be here and to reflect back on the season and everything that you've been through, it's the top of the list, man."

After winning his 10th title, Lakers coach Phil Jackson finds himself atop another list. Jackson, who previously won six titles with Michael Jordan and the Bulls and three with the O'Neal-Bryant Lakers, broke a tie with Celtics legend Red Auerbach and set a new NBA record for championships by a coach.

"I'll smoke a cigar tonight in memory of Red," Jackson said after the Lakers received their championship trophy.

The Lakers, whether they were led by George Mikan, Magic Johnson, O'Neal or Bryant, have spent plenty of time atop the NBA. As the Minneapolis Lakers, they won the title in the NBA's first season in 1950. The 2008-09 title is the first since Bryant, Jackson and O'Neal teamed to lead Los Angeles to three consecutive titles from 2000-02. Jackson retired after the Lakers lost the 2004 Finals to Detroit, and the Lakers traded O'Neal to the Heat after electing to build around Bryant.

Jackson returned a year later, and the Lakers made the Finals in 2008, where they fell to Boston in six games. This year, the Lakers nearly mirrored last year's Celtics, winning the first two at home, dropping Game 3 on the road and storming back from a seemingly insurmountable deficit to win Game 4. The only difference? The Lakers didn't need a sixth game.

The Magic led for most of Sunday's first quarter, and they had a 40-36 lead in the second before Lakers guard Derek Fisher hit a three-pointer to launch a 16-0 run. Forward Trevor Ariza, whom the Magic traded to the Lakers in November 2007, scored seven of his 15 points during the run. The Lakers went into halftime up 10. They stretched the lead to 15 to end the third and seemingly put the game out of reach when Bryant hit the jumper over Turkoglu with 8:13 remaining to give the Lakers an 83-67 lead.

Bryant scored a game-high 30 points and finished with a 32.4-point average for the Finals. Pau Gasol, the 7-foot Spaniard whose arrival from Memphis late last season seemed to be the final piece in the Lakers' championship puzzle, scored 14 points and grabbed 15 rebounds. Rashard Lewis led the Magic with 18 points, while Dwight Howard scored 11 and grabbed 10 rebounds.

The Magic will be left wondering what might have happened had Howard made either of two free throws with 11.1 seconds remaining in Game 4 or if Van Gundy had ordered them to foul immediately after those missed free throws. Instead, Fisher drilled a three-pointer to force overtime. Later, Fisher hit another three to seal the win, and Van Gundy lamented his decision to avoid a free-throw-shooting contest. "That'll haunt me forever," Van Gundy said after Game 4.

If the Magic make prudent moves this offseason, they have the nucleus to return to the Finals next year. Howard will be just 24, and the Magic should have plenty of talent around him. "Certainly Orlando is very capable of coming back to the Finals," Jackson said Sunday. Jackson's team may have provided the motivation the Magic will need to return. Shortly after the game, Howard chatted with point guard Jameer Nelson about just that. "Just see how they're celebrating," Howard said. "It should motivate us. It's like what I told Jameer, 'We were right there at our goal.' Our goal was in reach."

But the Lakers wanted it more. As Fisher dribbled out the clock, Bryant turned and pumped both fists. Seconds later, the Lakers piled into a group hug. Bryant stood in the middle of it all.

"I just don't have to hear that criticism, that idiotic criticism, anymore," Bryant said of never having won a title without Shaq. "That's the biggest thing. I don't have to hear that stuff anymore. ... It feels like I'm dreaming right now. I can't believe this moment is here."

Kobe not planning to opt out of contract

Kobe.jpg

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) -- Kobe Bryant said he plans to stay with the NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers even he if opts out of his contract this summer. Phil Jackson said his health will dictate whether he returns as coach.

Bryant met with Jackson and general manager Mitch Kupchak for an individual exit interview Friday.

The finals MVP can terminate the last two years of his contract and become an unrestricted free agent on July 1. He's spent his entire 13-year career with the Lakers, winning four NBA championships. But he could get a new, more lucrative and longer deal if he opted out.

Asked by reporters if he would opt out, Bryant said, "I've been deflecting that all year and I ain't going to stop now."

Pressed to explain, he responded, "I'm not going anywhere. I know I ain't going nowhere, so it's just a waste of our breaths just talking about it."

Bryant turns 31 in August. He averaged 32.4 points, 7.4 assists and 5.6 rebounds during the finals, when the Lakers defeated the Orlando Magic in five games.

Kupchak met with reporters before Bryant did and said, "We have no indication of what he may or may not do."

Jackson, who turns 64 in September, said he'll decide about next season after he gets some health issues checked out.

This season, he missed two West Coast road games because of pain and swelling in his lower legs caused by plantar fasciitis, an issue "that concerned me a little bit," he said. He blamed late-night flights that aggravated the condition.

He has undergone two hip replacement operations since October 2006 -- using a cane at various times -- and walks with a noticeable hitch in his step.

"I'm feeling good," said Jackson, who was scheduled to appear on the "Tonight Show" Friday night, the same show Bryant visited two days earlier.

Jackson signed a two-year contract extension last season and holds the option on a second year. The contract contains a date by which he is required to tell the Lakers if he plans to return, but Kupchak said the team is willing to give Jackson the time he needs to see a doctor.

"That date is fast approaching next week," Kupchak said. "We're talking about hopefully getting him to indicate to us in the next week or two or three his decision."

Bryant wants Lakers management and owner Jerry Buss to bring back starter Trevor Ariza and sixth man Lamar Odom, who both become unrestricted free agents on July 1.

"Extremely critical," he said about bringing both players back. "Those are pieces that are tough to find. We have such a great team. It's rare that you find a collection of guys that are so talented and willing to sacrifice themselves for the benefit of the group.

"Now it's just about keeping this group together so we can keep on winning this thing."

Jackson also wants to see the team remain intact, including Ariza and Odom.

"I'm convinced that we can get both of these guys back," he said. "Obviously, it's going to take sacrifice on many parts."

Bryant's exit interview wrapped up a hectic week in which he led the Lakers to their 15th NBA title, made the cover of Sports Illustrated, hit the talk-show circuit and visited Disneyland.

His daughters, ages 6 and 3, who called him Grumpy because he frowned so much during the playoffs, are happy he's home again.

"They just want me around all the time. They're jumping on my back," he said.

Bryant's offseason plans include a trip to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, trying scuba diving, and attending a game between his favorite soccer team FC Barcelona and the Los Angeles Galaxy on Aug. 1.

"It's going to be very relaxing. No evil flashbacks," he said, referring to last season's loss to Boston in the finals.

Kobe Bryant

By Ian Whittell

Phil Jackson, the LA Lakers and, above all others, Kobe Bryant stood on top of the basketball world in Orlando on Sunday.

Yet, in the contest for the hearts and minds of the great American sporting public, Bryant may still be fighting a losing battle.

His 30 points in the 99-86 victory over the Orlando Magic clinched the 2009 NBA title for the Lakers and their 15th championship overall.

Kobe Bryant celebrates with his family

It also secured a record tenth title for their brilliant coach Jackson and the title of Finals MVP for Bryant himself.

It was also Bryant's fourth championship, having been part of the Lakers teams that won titles from 2000-2 alongside the larger-than-life and decidedly off-the-wall Shaquille O'Neal.

Bryant, rightly or wrongly, was later accused of forcing O'Neal out of LA because of his supposed desperation to prove he could be the sole leader of a championship team.

Now, Bryant is exactly that.

But in a nation that tends to idolise its superstars - particularly winners like Michael Jordan and O'Neal himself - Kobe polarises opinion into the 'Love Him' or 'Hate Him' camps.

Bryant's much-publicised brush with the law in Colorado in 2003, when he was accused of raping a hotel worker, did not help his public persona, even though charges were eventually dropped.

Much of mainstream America may now have re-embraced the 30-year-old, his shoe company, for example, running a huge advertising campaign throughout these NBA play-offs featuring a Kobe puppet.

Right now, it really feels like a dream, it feels unbelievable
Kobe Bryant

Still, opposition fans love to bait Bryant and even an embarrassingly fluffy Spike Lee fly-on-the-wall documentary that followed him throughout a recent game did little to improve the perception of Bryant as a player to whom it is hard to warm.

Of course, it hardly helped during these Finals that Bryant has been so focused upon victory, and so miserable for his family to be around, that he revealed his children have christened him "Grumpy."

The in-your-face TV coverage of the games also frequently showed Bryant berating team-mates during time-outs, trying to will them to match his own imperious standards.

Bryant's curious public standing also explains why many pundits were quick to point out a couple of sub-par outings from him against Orlando, where fatigue or, perhaps, old age seemed to be taking their toll late in games.

But, whatever the general perception about Bryant, Game Five showed him at his very best, bringing team-mates into play when necessary then making the key plays that set the tone at vital stages of the game.

Kobe Bryant adds another two points against the Magic
Bryant's talents are unquestioned

A outlandish dunk on his marker Mickael Pietrus was the spark for the Lakers pulling away in the second period and building a 56-46 interval lead.

An equally outrageous spinning baseline move in the third put LA up by 11.

And a devastating three-pointer in the fourth period eased the Lakers 16 points up and removed any lingering danger.

"You grow as person, grow as man and try to figure out best way to lead these guys," said Bryant of his development over the past nine years since his first championship.

"This means everything. We sacrificed so much, put in so much time, so much effort, they are a group of guys who are like brothers to me and now we can enjoy it together.

"It was just the challenge of it that drove me on. It's so tough, it's a world championship and you have to start from scratch every year.

"Right now, it really feels like a dream, it feels unbelievable."

Where Bryant goes from here in terms of his public image is unclear - he would not, for example, be the first sportsman on the planet to gain in popularity as he mellows and ages.

But one place he is not going is to another NBA team. Bryant, who earned just over $21m from the Lakers this season, can opt out of his contract this summer but, when asked if he was likely to do so, replied with a simple: "No."

Love him or hate him, Kobe Bryant is set to be the NBA's dominant force for some years yet.

The Los Angeles Lakers captured their 15th championship and first since 2002 by beating the Orlando Magic 99-86 in Game Five of the NBA Finals on Sunday.

The win gave the Lakers an unassailable 4-1 lead in the best-of-seven series.

Coach Phil Jackson claimed a record 10th title in the process, with Kobe Bryant securing his fourth title.

The 30-year-old guard, who led the Lakers with 30 points in Orlando, was also named the Most Valuable Player, the first time he has won the award.

The Lakers took control of Game Five in the second quarter, scoring 16 straight points to turn a four-point deficit into a 52-40 lead with three minutes left in the first half.

Koby Bryant

Los Angeles saw their 10-point halftime lead sliced to 58-53, but Lamar Odom hit two three-pointers during a 13-2 run to give the Lakers a 71-55 advantage with just over three minutes left in the third quarter.

Rashard Lewis had 18 points to lead the Magic, while Hedo Turkoglu, Rafer Alston and Courtney Lee each added 12.

After the final horn, Bryant leaped into the air and was quickly engulfed by his team-mates, who bounced around the floor of Amway Arena.

Bryant then gave long a hug and shared a few words with Jackson before sweeping up his daughters, both wearing gold Lakers dresses, into his arms.

For this moment to be here and to reflect back on the season and everything that you've been through, it's top of the list, man
Kobe Bryant

The championship was Bryant's first since the end of his partnership with former team-mate Shaquille O'Neal, who now plies his trade for the Phoenix Suns.

Many critics had questioned whether or not Bryant and the Lakers would be able to win an NBA crown again without the duo playing together.

"It was like Chinese water torture," Bryant said. "I would cringe every time I heard those comments.

"That's the biggest thing. I don't have to hear that stuff anymore. It finally felt like a big old monkey was off my back.

"It felt so good to be able to have this moment. For this moment to be here and to reflect back on the season and everything that you've been through, it's top of the list, man."

The win was far from an individual achievement, as five other Lakers players scored in double figures.

Odom and Pau Gasol had double-doubles of 17 points and 10 rebounds and 14 points and 15 boards respectively, while Trevor Ariza added 15 points and Derek Fisher had 13.

"I think as team-mates we understand what kind of player he is, what he brings to the table, and we try to complement each other," said Gasol.

"I think what we've been doing well this year is understanding what our roles were, what our abilities are out there as individuals and make it work as a team.

"It really worked out well. I think we all understood how to play this game together and to take us to this championship."

Jackson's record 10th NBA title surpassed the achievements of legendary Boston Celtics coach Red Auerbach, who won nine in a 10-year period, while the Celtics still hold the most titles as a team at 17.

Phil Jackson
Jackson eclipses Boston Celtics coach Red Auerbach, who won nine titles

Jackson had won six with the Michael Jordan-led Chicago Bulls and this was his fourth title at the helm of the Lakers.

"Having won 10 championships is a remarkable accomplishment, there's no doubt about it," Jackson said.

Orlando counterpart Stan Van Gundy added: "You look at the guy's record, it's undeniable."

Despite defeat reaching the finals represented a great achievement for the Magic, who played in the series for only the second time in their history and the first since 1995.

That proved little consolation to Dwight Howard, who said: "The only thing you can do is look back on the season, look back on what we did as a team, personally look at what I did, just try to come back next year with the same fire and try to accomplish our goal."

Magic on the brink after losing Game 4

By Ian Whittell

Orlando may be known primarily as the vacation capital of the world, particularly to the thousands of Brits who holiday here every year, but events of the past two months in the NBA are putting the Florida city on the map for altogether different reasons.

A thrilling 99-91 overtime defeat to the LA Lakers in Game Four of the NBA Finals in the early hours of Friday put the Magic in a 3-1 hole in the best-of-seven series.

They face having to win three in a row to steal the NBA crown from the Lakers, starting with Game Five in Orlando.

But whatever the eventual outcome of the 2009 NBA title battle, a city whose main claim to a sporting heritage is the fact that Tiger Woods calls it home, is now firmly on the US sports map.

As they were when the Finals began, Kobe Bryant's Lakers are strong favourites to claim the crown - especially as they own home court advantage in two of the remaining three matches - but the Magic's gutsy underdog performance has captured the imagination of basketball fans around the world.

Dwight Howard, "Superman" to his adoring Orlando public, remains the closest thing to a bona fide superstar on the Magic team. But one of the most attractive features of the Magic line-up is its motley collection of journeymen players, many of whom had no reputation before landing in the land of make believe.

In keeping with international flavour that surrounds one of the world's premier vacation destinations, the Magic also enjoy key contributions from a Pole, a Frenchman and a Turk.

The Pole, Marcin Gortat, backs up Howard and made a couple of key first half baskets as the Magic built a 12-point lead they carelessly let slip after the break in Game Four.

The Turk, Hedo Turkoglu, led all Orlando scorers with 25 points and the Frenchman, Mickael Pietrus, added 15 as, for the second time in this series, the Magic lost a heartbreaker in overtime.

Given the fine line between success and failure in those OT matches, Orlando could just as easily be leading the Finals 3-1 as they are losing them but for basic errors, such as 15 missed free-throws.

The fact that it is Kobe Bryant and the Lakers in front is down to the experience of the current team, which lost the Finals a year ago to the Boston Celtics, and the franchise in general, which is now homing in on its 15th championship.

But in the battle for the sporting hearts and minds of America - and the wider world - the Magic are certainly giving their more illustrious opponents a run for their money.

Derek Fisher

Game 4 highlights - Plays of the day

The Lakers are the Manchester United of the NBA, their home games populated by beautiful California people and a host of Hollywood celebs. Apart from Tiger, who sat in his Magic season tickets seats on Friday, the list of Orlando's famous fans is decidedly B list, in keeping with the down-to-earth mood of coach Stan Van Gundy, his players and the club.

The Lakers tend to belong in the "love 'em or loathe 'em category" and, for that reason as well as Orlando's personality, the Magic are firmly the choice of the neutral in these Finals.

Thus, whatever the outcome of these games, the Magic - Orlando's first credible professional sports team - look poised to be a serious player for years to come, especially with Howard declaring he wants a long-term future in central Florida.

Much more of this, and the word Orlando will start meaning more than Mickey Mouse, Disney World and Universal Studios.

NBA highlights - Lakers secure vital win

Derek Fisher hit a couple of clutch three-pointers as the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Orlando Magic 99-91 in overtime to take a 3-1 NBA Finals lead.

Orlando All-Star centre Dwight Howard missed two free throws 11.1 seconds from the end of regulation time with the Magic leading 87-84.

Fisher sunk a vital three to send the game into an extra period and then scored the crucial basket in overtime.

The Lakers will secure their 15th NBA crown by winning Game 5 on Sunday.

"On a championship run you're going to have moments where you just make big plays, and tonight was one of them," said Lakers guard Kobe Bryant, who scored 32 points.

"The guys stepped up. That's what the journey is about."

The Lakers lead the best-of-seven series 3-1 and can wrap up their first title since 2002 with a victory on Sunday in Orlando.

Bryant led the Lakers with 32 points but the 11-times AllStar and 2008 Most Valuable Player was not at his best, hitting only 11 of 31 shots. Pau Gasol and Trevor Ariza each added 16 for Los Angeles.

The Lakers got out of jail when Howard missed his two free throws - had he made even one of them, the Magic would likely have levelled the series at 2-2 and been in the hunt for their first title.

"I just missed them," said Howard, who misfired on eight of his 14 free-throw attempts. "I've been working on my free throws. They just weren't falling.

"There's no need to get down on myself. I think I did a lot of good things tonight, just free throws weren't there. Not just for me but for everybody."

After a time out the Lakers worked the ball upcourt and found Fisher open on the wing, and the veteran left-hander calmly sank the game-tying, three-pointer.

Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said his decision not to foul the Lakers when they were bringing the ball upcourt in the waning seconds of regulation "will haunt me forever."

There's no need for us to hold our heads down - we've been in some tough situations but as a team we've always found a way to come back
Dwight Howard

"We gave him so much space to shoot the ball," he said of Fisher's game-tying shot. "We played like we were trying to prevent the lay up.

"We did a good job, we denied Bryant the ball, and then we just didn't play Derek Fisher, just didn't guard him."

Hedo Turkoglu paced the Magic with 25 points, while Howard added 16 points and 21 rebounds. Orlando committed 17 turnovers and hit only 22 of 37 attempts from the free-throw line.

"We had it but just kind of slipped away because of our stupidness," said Turkoglu. "We can't be really down on ourselves, no matter what. Win or lose tonight, we have to win the game on Sunday."

Ariza scored 13 in the third quarter when the Lakers recovered from a 12-point deficit to take a four-point lead into the final frame.

The Magic went down by six in the final quarter, silencing the crowd of more than 17,000 at the Amway Arena, before rallying down the stretch.

Orlando are now hoping to become the first team to win the championship after facing a 3-1 deficit.

"There's no need for us to hold our heads down," said Howard. "We were always fighting and will believe until there's no more games to be played.

"We've been in some tough situations, but as a team we've always found a way to come back."

Magic coach eyes change of luck

Dwight Howard and coach Stan Van Gundy
Stan Van Gundy is standing by his star centre Dwight Howard

Orlando Magic coach Stan Van Gundy says his team can rebound from their second overtime loss of the NBA Finals and win Game Five at home on Sunday.

The Magic could have beaten the LA Lakers in regulation time but lost 99-91 and now trail three games to one.

"It's not like we can't play with the Lakers," he said. "Our guys put everything into that game last night.

"I just felt badly for them, like I felt after Game Two. But they'll be ready to play."

The Magic missed a shot on the buzzer to win Game Two and were punished when the Lakers took the game 101-96 in overtime.

Star centre Dwight Howard took some criticism after the latest defeat for missing two free throws with his team 87-84 ahead with 11 seconds remaining.

"I don't want Dwight getting down about it," said Van Gundy. "The guy put out one of the great efforts - he had 20-plus rebounds.

"Dwight's a guy, with his demeanour, that a lot of people in the media have chosen to criticise."

We're down 3-1 - that's the reality, but I don't think there's anyone who isn't aware of the fine line between winning and losing
Orlando coach Stan Van Gundy

Van Gundy, whose team must win the next three games in order to seal a first-ever NBA title, believes his team will prevent the Lakers winning the title in Florida on Sunday.

"We have shown great resiliency throughout the season," he said.

"We played extremely poorly in the third quarter - that was as bad a stretch as we've had this series - yet we came back to lead by five points in the last quarter," he said.

"We're down 3-1 - that's the reality, but I don't think there's anyone who plays, coaches or commentates on this game who isn't aware of the fine line there is between winning and losing."

Lakers coach Phil Jackson stands just one win away from a 10th NBA title in 19 seasons as a coach in the league but is aware that the decisive win will not be easy to come by.

"That is something that is a lot to do with how a team plays," he said. "We're going to have to play at a very elevated level to win this.

"To do that we have to be focussed. We have to match the energy level of the crowd and the Orlando team."

Jackson, who won six NBA titles with Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls in the 1990s, can sense the anticipation in his team.

"There's no doubt they're excited about it," he said. "You can sense the mood of the team. Tomorrow's practice could be the last of the season and you know the players would be excited about that."

The Orlando Magic defeat the Los Angeles Lakers 108-104 in Game 3 of the 2009 NBA Finals. The Orlando Magic shot a finals record 63 percent ... The Lakers palyed good man, they had as many FG's as Orlando today, and 3 more three pointers. You make it sound as if Orlando played every damn facet of the game to near perfection and still barely won. The Lakers grabbed more offensive boards, made more 3's, and finished with as many FG's. That's why it was a 4-point game.

Dwight Howard

NBA highlights - Magic bounce back

Dwight Howard and Rashard Lewis each scored 21 points as Orlando defeated the Los Angeles Lakers 108-104 to trail 2-1 in the best-of-seven NBA Finals.

Lakers star Kobe Bryant looked set to continue his dominance of the series with 17 points in the opening quarter.

But he went on to hit only 11 of 25 shots, missed five of his 10 free-throw attempts and committed four turnovers.

Bryant also fouled Mickael Pietrus, who then sank the game-clinching free-throws to give the Magic hope.

Game four also takes place in Florida, on Thursday, as the Magic look to become only the fourth team to recover from 2-0 down to win the finals.

And Howard believes the Magic can do just that.

"We didn't allow being down 0-2 to discourage us from winning," he said.

"We're going to continue to fight. I told my team-mates, 'You've got to continue to believe'. We've had two tough losses, but things will turn around for us if we continue to believe."

It was a solid performance by the home side with Howard hitting five of six shots and collecting a team-leading 14 rebounds.

The team trusts me to come through in those situations, and it just didn't happen
Los Angeles Lakers' Kobe Bryant

Point guard Rafer Alston contributed 20 points, as they set a record in the championship round by connecting on nearly 63% of their shots.

"We played with more speed, more energy on the offensive end," said Alston.

"We were able to get down the floor, push it, a lot of pick and roll, which is our game.

"The bad thing is we shot 62.5% and almost lost the game, so we've got to find a way to defend these guys."

The Magic squandered a nine-point lead midway through the fourth quarter but held on to win.

Lakers forward Pau Gasol hit two free-throws to level the scores at 99-99 with a little under three minutes remaining, but a Pietrus basket and a foul shot by Alston gave the Magic a 102-99 lead.

And when Bryant uncharacteristically turned the ball over and then fouled Pietrus, the Magic swingman kept his nerve from the free-throw line to seal the win.

"It was disappointing," said Bryant, last year's Most Valuable Player, who is looking for his fourth championship victory.

"I'm used to coming through in those situations, the team trusts me to come through in those situations, and it just didn't happen."

Bryant was restricted to just 14 points in the last three quarters of the game as the Magic defence toughened up.

"They really started coming hard to him," said Lakers coach Phil Jackson.

"Howard was consistently coming at him on shots, making it difficult. He never really got in rhythm again the same way."

And Jackson conceded that Bryant's poor foul shooting played a huge part in the loss.

"Those are the kinds of things that change a game," he said.

"This is a very unusual thing, Kobe shooting five for 10 after hitting 14 in a row at the end of the game the other night. That's a difference maker."

Lakers edge to win over Orlando

NBA highlights

NBA highlights - Orlando v Lakers

Kobe Bryant starred again for the Los Angeles Lakers as they claimed an 101-96 overtime win against Orlando to take a 2-0 lead in the NBA Finals.

Bryant led the scoring with 29 points, although his side failed to repeat the domination they enjoyed in their 100-75 victory in the opening game.

This time the Magic could have won in regular time had Courtney Lee's lay-in attempt at the buzzer not rimmed out.

The best-of-seven series now moves to Orlando for up to three games.

"We just drove ourselves through the game," said Lakers coach Phil Jackson.

"I didn't think Kobe had a good game at all as far as his standards go.

"They double teamed him, they trapped him, they came on all his drives, and we didn't adjust to it."

Pau Gasol, who had 24 points and 10 rebounds, scored seven of the Lakers' 13 points in the overtime, which proved to be crucial.

Both sides had previously missed chances to win the game, with Bryant squandering an opportunity when his short jumper with 0.6 seconds left was blocked by Hedo Turkoglu.

After a timeout, Lee failed to hit the target and his team were then outscored 13-8 in the extra session, leaving the Lakers on track for their 15th NBA title and first since 2002.

"I don't think we dodged a bullet," insisted Bryant.

"They bounced back like we knew they would, played extremely well, and we got out of here with a win."

The third game is on Tuesday, and Orlando coach Stan Van Gundy believes his players can hit back.

Van Gundy said: "A series can change. You've got to take it one game at a time.

"It's extremely frustrating. I didn't think we played great, because we had 20 turnovers, but we fought hard. We had chances to win. We didn't get it done."

NBA highlights, akers vs nuggets game 6

Los angeles lakers advance to the 30th finals appearance in lakers history. Some of the reasons why the lakers would rather face the orlando magic in the 2009 nba finals !!

1: First obvious reason is homecourt advantage. Lakers would have the first 2 games at staples with a chance to go up 2-0 then if the series goes farther, they have game 6 and 7 at home. Last year's finals, it was obvious that it is very tough to win on the road with all the unstable whistles that goes on.
Leon Powe more free throws than the entire lakers team is a good example of referring goes wild .

2: Lakers lost 2 games to the Magic this season but the playoffs are much different and the intensity is much much different. In the game at orlando, it was the second game of back to back. The day before lakers played at miami and game went into last second. So fatigue and long road trip could have been a factor. Still, the game vs magic went to the last second and kobe and sasha had a chance to tie the game in the last seconds but they both missed.
In the game at staples center, the game was pretty close and it went into the last minutes but kobe missed some shots.

3: Here is the fun thing, at orlando , magic's leading scorer was jameer nelson with 27 points 4 rebounds and 5 assists. In the game at staples, magic's leading scorer was jameer nelson with 28 points 6 rebounds and 8 assists. he was a main facotor in that game hitting the clutch threes.
If you don't know, jameer nelson is out for the season with a shoulder injury. In other words, no Jameer nelson in the finals vs lakers. HE was the main reaon lakers lost those 2 games vs magic in the regular season.

4: at orlando, kobe bryant 41 points 8 rebounds, 3 assists. at staples, kobe bryant 28 points 13 rebounds 11 assists. In other words, noone on the magic team can stop kobe. (courtney lee will be guardinh him). watching the eastern conference finals, the magic rarely double team lebron, if they do that with kobe, you know what is going to happen with kobe being allowed to go 1 on 1 .

5: magic don't have enough size in the middle. dwight howard and gortat are their only centers. battier rarely comes of the bench. bynum can probably handle howard, but rashard lewis cannot handle pau gasol in the post. even if lamar gets in the game, lewis is not a good post defender.

6: Cavaliers defense is insane. I watch the games vs magic and the cavaliers can go for like 4-5 minutes forcing the magic into taking tough shots and denying the ball from touching howard's hands.
lebron james is getting better defensively. Ben wallace and varejao are very good defenders and they would be a nightmare for gasol with their physical defense. Cavaliers defense on kobe is much much better than the magics. in 2 games vs cavaliers this seaosn, kobe did not shoot the ball well at all !!

They can put lebron on him, or double or even triple team him. Frustrating defense.

I can think of more stuff to add but I don't want you guys to get bored. Hopefully this helps a little. If anyone got anything else to add, just leave a comment.

Go lakers !!

NBA latest news for fan ,Magic vs Lakers Game 1 NBA - Videos and Highlights

Kobe Bryant scores 40 points for Los Angeles Lakers 100-75 to defeat the Orlando Magic, taking advantage of 1-0 in the final of the NBA.
LOS ANGELES, United States, Jun. 4, 2009 .- This year, the Lakers are not going to pass over.

Playing with more harshness than last year, Los Angeles Lakers, with a great performance of his stellar escort Kobe Bryant, on Thursday crushed 100-75 by the Orlando Magic to stay with the first game of the series for the championship National Basketball League to United States (NBA).

Bryant has been waiting a whole year for another chance, after the beating the Boston Celtics gave their team in the sixth game of the finals before. Although he stayed with the gold medal in Beijing, is another gold trophy you want now.

"I want both, that's all," said Bryant. "I want very much."

Bryant scored 40 points, his personal record in a final, and played like possessed. Also recovered eight rebounds and handed out eight assists. Is that the Lakers will be no better way to keep your number 15.

The Spanish Pau Gasol scored 16 points and added eight rebounds and Lamar Odom finished with 11 points and 14 rebounds. The Lakers will host the second match of the series on Sunday.
